Medical billing and transcription or coding is a popular career choice for returning college students, because this profession often comes with the flexibility of location independence, that is, the possibility of working from home, at least part of the time.

What is it?

Medical billing involves the processing of heath insurance claims and accruate billing of patients.

Medical coding involves health care delivery systems, medical health care information terminologies, and classification systems for diseases.

Sample job description for a medical transcriptionist:

  • Responsible to learn and use the Voice Recognition System, including providing feedback on issues and product features.
  • Listens to the dictated reports from the voice recognition system as the radiologist dictates them and makes all necessary corrections.
  • Verifies the accuracy of the downloaded demographics from the HIS System.
  • Edits, STAT and other reports on a daily basis while maintaining established quality standards.
  • Prints and distributes, STAT reports according to department protocol.
  • Edits a minimum of 150 reports per day.
  • Edits dictation at 98% accuracy.
  • Prints all QA comments dictated by the radiologist and sends them to the Supervisor for review.
  • Prints out all Wet Read reports and forwards them to the correct party for processing.
  • Informs supervisor of Medical Staff follow-up and communication as needed.
  • Completes special projects as requested by Management.
  • Reads and responds to all emails appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • When the Voice Recognition system goes down, picks up with transcription using the backup dictating system.
  • Communicates with Supervisor, keeping him/her informed of workflow, office problems.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Understands and supports hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Transcription Supervisor.
  • Incorporates hospital and departmental Mission, Vision, and Values into all aspects of job performance.
  • Customer Service Responsibilities:
  • The Medical Report Editor must be customer-focused and attentive to the physicians needs and departments requesting reports.

A successful career in medical billing requires at least the following skills:

  • High degree of mature self-motivation
  • Ability to meet deadlines with high-quality, accurate work
  • Good English and word-processing skills
  • Good customer service skills, friendly attentive demeanor
  • Attention to detail and accuracy

Private and public institutions offer courses and certificates in medical billing, coding, and transcription.

What does it pay?

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical support professionals, including Medical Coders, are one of the 10 fastest-growing allied health occupations. You can 13-15 cents/line; if you type a comfortable 200 lines per hour, your hourly rate is over $26.00. The median wage for coders is $35,000 to $50,000 per year.
