Helping Returning Adult Students Find the Right College and Program

Older student, more mature studentMore mature students returning to education face a unique set of challenges and opportunities.  For one, they are typically financially more secure and can afford going to school more easily (in difficult economic times, this may not be true, however).  On the other hand, returning to a student role will require a greater adjustment and sacrifice from people used to their own ways and control.

For adults with a certain life experience, it can be difficult at first to submit to the educational process, to open their minds to information that may be contrary to their own experience, to accept new perspectives.  But once they can transition from their previous mind set of life experience and open their ears and minds to the ideas, theories, and processes presented in class, they will find the experience rejuvenating and enlightening.

As a mature adult, it can be difficult to admit, "I don't know!"   But in reality, in this fast-moving, high-tech world, there are new important discoveries, products, approaches, and solutions that we have to admit we know little or nothing about.  School reopens the option of comfort with the unknown, it resets the mind to a learning position.

At the same time, life experience is a great benefit to the returning student.  It allows him or her to put the new knowledge into a realistic context, to contribute a dose of reality to the school environment, to share with other younger, less experienced students how education and life will merge into a meaningful future.

If you are among the more mature crowd of returning students, examine institutions from your unique perspective and find a school and program that works for you and your needs.
